Failing Enterprise Discussion Board:
How To "Quote"
"Quoting" on the discussion board is the process of creating your
message and including text that appeared in a previous message,
usually as a way of indicating a direct "I'm replying specifically
to these words" relationship between what you write and what someone
else wrote previously. There are three ways to make quoting
work properly:
1. When you wish to reply to an existing message, you can
always just click on the "Quote" action button and the entire
message will appear, already quoted, in a new text editing area
where you can write your reply. You'll notice that the quoted
text will begin with a special marker that looks like
[QUOTE=Unregistered] and will end with another special marker
that looks like [/QUOTE] (I'm using bold here only for
emphasis; the markers are not in bold in the message). These
special markers tell the system to put all the text that appears
between these markers in the special "quote" format. Think of
them as bookends that begin and end the quoted text. The first
marker will always give the username of the person you are quoting,
although if you were to delete the "=Unregistered" part, it would
also work just fine.
2. You can also manually insert the quoting markers at any
time by highlighting the text you wish to quote and then clicking on
the "Quote" icon at the top of your editor. The "Quote" icon
is usually on the far right, looks like a block of quoted text, and
when you hover your mouse over it, says "Wrap [QUOTE] tags around
selected text".
3. Lastly, if you wish to quote an entire message but want
to insert your own (unquoted) text into the middle of the message,
you just need to terminate the previous quoted section by typing
[/QUOTE] and then at the end of your text, where you want the
quoting of the previous poster's words to begin again, type
QUOTE=Unregistered] to begin another quoted section.
Remember: A quoted section always begins and ends with a
matched pair of [QUOTE=Unregistered] and [/QUOTE]
markers, and these markers are just normal text, so you can enter
and edit them yourself.
Also, remember that it's best to click on the "Preview Post"
action button before you click on the "Submit Reply" action button,
so you'll get a chance to see what your post will look like before
you submit it.
