If I understand you correctly you:
1)Bought the CDW
2)Your wife hit the rental car on accident
If this is what happened, permitting any specific wordage on the Terms and Conditions, then you should not have to pay for this. Hopefully you still have the copy (yellow or pink) of the signed contract. Read the back which includes the specific terms and conditions and read the part about how the CDW becomes void (i.e. drink and driving, off-roading, etc.) Get a copy of your damage report if you dont already have one. As long as you dont violate any of the terms and conditions as it pertains to your CDW then it should be covered.
Hiring a lawyer may not be the best idea just because it is a small amount. More than likely this is something that would get handled through small claims court so hiring a lawyer would just be throwing away money.
If your comprehensive deductible is $1000 or less than you will want to call your insurance company if this gets anymore out of hand. Good luck.
