It's a tough call for me when it comes to spelling. In the guidelines, I ask people to be tolerant of spelling and grammar issues, mostly because I'm much more aware now of how many people are learning English as second language, and how difficult it is to learn a second language. I make it a point to write as well as I can, but I don't criticize anyone for not doing it perfectly.
However... if you're going to insult someone, then your spelling and grammar errors are much more likely to be fair game. If you explicitly step outside the boundaries of good manners, you no longer enjoy immunity from criticism. See the "Best of" page for the discussion board. Some of those misspelled insults just slay me.
