Default Registration Now Required For Posting

Hello All,

Yes, the forums now require that you be registered and logged in while posting. This decision has been a long time coming and we've had many extended discussions about it.

The primary reason is that the board has gotten so big that I'm no longer able to effectively maintain the culture I'd like purely through setting an example and providing some coaching. There are many newcomers now who post anonymously and who use anonymous web proxies to prevent my blocking them by IP address and who are moving the board's culture in a direction I don't like.

By requiring registration, I can keep control of things better, although I'm saddened that I'm moving from guiding things through "soft" power (persuasion, example, discussion, etc.) to enforcing things through "hard" power (using the technology of this discussion board software).

There have been way too many attacks and way too much vandalism on the board recently.

I suspect that, on balance, we're going to have fewer posts, but better quality posts.

This decision also reflects that it's probably time for the site to grow up a little and start doing things like larger boards. Allowing anonymous posts was, of course, just asking for trouble and I've been amazed that we've been able to get away with it for as long as we have.

At first, I disagreed with required registration, but with all of the nonsense on the board lately- I agree.

That is absolutely hilarious. You allowed people to attack each other for years anonymously but now that the anonymity has turned on you it is time to register the users so you can put a muzzle on them.

Admin,

While I agree with your decision you must admit it comes at a odd time. Being that your personal info was thrown out on the site and now you force people to register seems a little hypocritical being that employees from ERAC have had their phone numbers, addresses and names put out these to serve people who would like to complain about a broken window or dents on a bumper. It does suck though that your personal info got out there. Seems like an ERAC upper level put that out there just to see your reaction and to be honest it looks like you bought it (so to speak). Keep up the good work, don't let people get you down.

JEAHO,

You are absolutely right about the main goal of this website being left behind. Its hilarious to see what nonsense (and I have been a part of it) a lot of these forums have become. You were one of the resons I first registered because I wanted to reply to some of your postings but after you vanished I just spent time pissing people off or talking shit about idiots on here. Hopefully we can get back to the old school days of trying to make shit right.

I predict that after our holy Admin judges the waters to be calmer and the threat to himself to have passed he will open the anonymous posting back up and cross his fingers. It might be a week or it might be a month, but I think it will happen. He has been taking a serious beating of late and this has most definitely been done to stop the pain. I also predict he will delete this post when all is said and done so you will have no evidence of my clairvoyant supremacy and my uncanny ability to judge someone's intentions.

He did get his ass handed to him pretty good today!! I loved the tirade he went on about "you are all just mad that you can't control the posts like I can" or some dog shit like that!!! And then in the same breath talked about this being an unmoderated site, so don't blame him for the content!

The problem is the nonsense has been all over the board for months, and ????? has allowed and promoted the vast majority of it, even chiming in with witty comments from time to time.

He obviously realizes it's not that fun to have people attacking him personally, just like people getting raked on here for their behaviour that is unrelated to the company.

This said, though the timing of making people register is hilarious, it is probably the smartest thing for his ongoing moderation and removal of offensive postings about people.
