Re: Corporate in St Louis I worked at corp St. Louis over a decade. In IT which just had the layoff. I was not one of those. The campus is one of the nicest in town. I never came from the branches. Most of us only knew of branches from what we saw in Free Enterprise or the occasional need to rent a car. By the way, for all those who work in branches, is Free Enterprise for real? Are those real branch employees or actors. If they work there I'm sure they are handpicked for that image they present. Occasionally we would be in the multi purpose room eating lunch and watch the bus loads of new recruits come through. We used to laugh at how energetic they all were. Like HR had some kind of cookie cutter in hiring. We sometime joked about which ones will be gone in six months and which one looks like the crafty one that might make it. We all know about the constant turnover at the branches. But at corporate, we are like civil servants. We are often stunned when we hear one person left or got fired here. Imagine the effect of that layoff. Everyone who has been at corporate long enough knows about all the politics and cronyism. You can do just fine playing it or not playing it. I guess up until now. There is a very strong grapevine at corporate and its disturbing. Everyone wonders if they had let another percent go, who would be on it. When is the next one. The talk is more of how will I and my family make it, pay bills, etc if or when the next one hits. It has zapped productivity. I wonder how many resumes have hit the net from this place. I wonder about the ones who don't seem to have an opinion. The talk of is who put the list together. We have seen so many BS artists succeed here that we know it's whether they like you or not. You wonder when managers look you in the eye if your next. I think even managers are wondering where they stand with their bosses. I will admit though that there is much waste here and we are very top heavy in management. I would be very concerned if certain talent walked because I don't think anyone could come in and figure out what's going on. This isn't like a rental branch where you can put in a whole new staff in one day and keep going on. There is a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience that keeps this technology going and we are losing or scaring a lot of it. I could have handled being one of the 200 or so as this has gotten pretty old around here and I guess I've been too complacent to look for the next opportunity. Maybe I should try for a civil servant job... But so many here are in bad shape if the next round hits them. Once again, a wonderful motivator. I don't know where all those founding values and principles went, but I haven't seen them around here lately. Of course, i can remember when i saw all the big shots, Andy, Don, and even Jack occasional pass by... I can even remember when I halfway believed in the corporate philosophy. Things are so secretive here. Image is everything. Layoffs...Never... Things have changed. I wonder if it's true 'where there's smoke there's fire'? Whatever, we'll know I'm sure in the forseeable future. |
