Default say damaged, but different car?!

I had a car for a night while mine was being repaired. Next day, I returned it but counter was closed for night early. So, I leave keys at shop.

Then, next day I get a call that there is major damage to the bumper as if someone had clipped it. I have no idea what they are talking about. I go to see the car after work (supposedly were going to meet me there, but they didn't), and it's a different color, make, model, and license number from my paperwork!

Frankly, I don't recall what I drove, because I have a set parking spot and didn't pay attention (I had other things on my mind and use my cell when getting in and out of cars). If the bumper was clipped, I probably would not have seen it based on how I park and entered the vehicle.

I'd like to know if this was the car I drove, or whether this is Enterprise mismangement. Not trying to get out of it, but not sure I "trust" Enterprise to provide evidence (not sure what it would even be).

I called the office back that day and asked for an update. Not running from this, but don't want to seem "begging" for them to pursue it, because I truly don't know if this is what I drove. Also, don't want some surprise down the road with a claim, particularly since not sure insurance will cover beyond deductable if doesn't match what my paperwork had.

Have they just decided it was a likely error? How much does this happen? should I just go with assuming my paperwork was in fact correct?

Thanx,
Annie

Do you take us for idiots? You don't know if it was the color or type of car you drove? I will come out and say, that is the biggest crock of shit I have heard in a while. Let me rephrase your question for you....

I rented a car, and it might have been damaged while I had it, but they had the wrong information on the contract. Am I going to be able to get off on a technicality?

The answer to your question is probably, yes. But, karma is a bitch.

It is truly possible that they put the wrong car on the contract. The mileage will tell the truth but if you have a contract that shows a different vehicle than the one they are saying you had when it was damaged then they are not going to be able to get your insurance company to pay. What that does mean though is that they will probably try to charge you and put you on the national do not rent list until you pay. You can probably get away with not being responsible since they don't have proof you actually drove that vehicle.

Two things, a contract is a contract and if the car isn't on there then you have no responsibility to the damage. However, if the damage is significant and you did the walkaround, then obviously the damage happened when you were in the car and you should own up and claim it on the insurance. The manager is taking the heat right now because some newbie probably hit the wrong key and rented the wrong car. I did it a million times. However, that damage is signifiicant to that manager's checks for the months to come. It could mean the difference between actually not getting a paycheck. So if you think you did it, make the claim. If you didn't do it fight it. But it is highly unlikely that the manager would claim you did it if you didn't. All he would have to do is rent the vehicle again, sell some damage waiver on that rental and then shop it when it comes back and write it off to damage waiver. Which is probably what he will do if you don't own up.

I just have a hard time believing anyone wouldn't remember what type of vehicle they drove. Maybe this is from years at the E, but I still don't see how anyone could be this absentminded.

Actually, it's easier than you think. If you rent cars frequently and aren't a "car guy", then they're all pretty much the same. Even when I'm driving my rental car, I usually have no idea what kind of car it is. I usually remember the color, though, but I must say that if it weren't for the trunk-opening feature on the key fob, there would have been days when I'd have a hard time finding it in a big parking lot.

It's just not that important to me. I always rent a large American-made sedan and I get in and it goes. When it's missing, or out of gas, or a giant four-wheel drive extended cab pickup, then I know I rented it from Enterprise, but otherwise I don't really notice nor care what kind of car it is.

And this is even despite the fact that 20 years ago I made my living as an auto mechanic.

I'm really focused on my business and I rent a couple dozen times per year. What kind of car is it? Don't know; don't care.

Yeah, lame, I know.
