What would happen if say my rental was a quarter tank less than it needed to be at return time, and I just stuck the garden hose in and put enough water in the tank to make up the missing quarter ?

Would the car run long enough for me to dump it off at the Enterprise branch and let them worry about any future mechanical issues?

No the vehicle would not run long at all. If you fill the tank a quarter full of water, it will immediatly enter the fuel line and the vehicle will begin to shudder and stall. If a renter is operating the vehicle at the time this could cause a fatality. In any case, once the vehicle is taken to the shop, they will find the water in the tank and fuel lines and you will be held responsible since you were the last renter and logic dictates you filled the tank with water. ERAC will send you a demand letter for the damages. You can file a claim with your insurance company or ERAC will do it for you.
Bottom line, don't be such a cheap ass and splurge on the $10 for gas. It's worth it for a clear conscience.

Alright, alright. I'll buy the cheapest gasoline I can find and bring the tank up to pre-rental level.

Precisely why I never rent from ERAC. Anything less than a full tank is a stupid policy. Having worked with ERAC and a couple other companies, I hated the ERAC policy on gas. ERAC loses "Far more" money on gas then they make.

The real reason, is they're too cheap to hire the staff necessary that it would take to run the car over to the gas station to fill it up. And from my experience working with other companies, less than 10% cars came back less than full after having been given out full.

Enterprise on the other hand, seem to think that this is a bad idea. They gave me my vehicle with the tank one quarter full, and asked me to return it in a similar state. I asked them the MPG and the capacity of the tank, neither of which they could tell me. I had no way therefore of calculating how much fuel I would use on my journey.

Inevitably, when I returned the vehicle, there was quite a lot more fuel in it than when I'd started. I complained to the staff again about this policy, but to no avail. I've been trying to get some sort of response from their help desk, but my emails seem to simply be ignored.

I consider this fuel policy to amount to theft from the customer.

I will be recommending to people in my area (Hertford, UK) not to use Enterprise for their rentals!

The owner's manual is in the glove compartment, which has the fuel tank capacity in it. Employees can't memorize 40 different MPG and capacity numbers.

My question is this: if insurance or dealership customers don't leave credit cards on their tickets and they end up dropping their cars at dealerships or body shops, who would actually follow up on EVERY single car and every single gas tank if they probably needed to re-rent the car immediately?

Thats right. No one. That's why ERAC doesn't fill tanks: Because insurance & dealership rentals won't refill the tanks, and ERAC would have to come out of pocket with cash all day long to pay gas. Crying shame.

But, I had to charge gas if they got the car full and returned it empty. Gas isn't free as you may have guessed. And because of some vo-tech graduates like the original poster of this thread, they would return the cars empty and because of the turnaround rate they would go out empty.

And I do get out often Admin, I don't sit behind a computer 24/7 monitoring this glorified hate site. Maybe you should go out and check out the price of gas before you start talking shit.
Hey! you want to know why i dont rent you a car w/ a full tank of gas???? or give gas refunds???? heres why:

1. chances are if your car gets returned in the middle of the day, i'm already in the hole 5 cars w/ people still waiting, so if i got to waste time putting gas in a car, mrs. white-trash house wife taking her car to the dodge dealership is going to rip my head off!

2. your cheap ass rents an economy car for 26.99 a day w/ a half tank, and then your stupid ass "accidentally" fills the tank up all the way at 3.60 a gallon, and now your demanding a gas refund of $25, now i'm basically paying you to rent the damn car and my kids go hungry because you cant hold the pump handle down, and count to 10!!!

3. if someone actually does forget to put gas in the car, all i do is ask them for 5$ cash, pocket that shit, and scarf down some McDonalds on the way to pick up the next cheap ass w/ an ECAR res!!!

4. I hate you

yeah right, who cares. no credit card on file? doesnt matter to me, policy is still to replace the gas you legitimately used today. nothing like sending a paper bill to someone's house for $8.00. customer service my ass, if you totally want to go to collections cause you think your getting one over on ERAC, rock and roll
