well.. in my area C7C we don't have the united way thing here... but we have Centraide which is pretty much the same thing... no one makes it mandatory for us to donate, but they do ask us to anyway... they give some charity autions and free lunches with lvl 3 staff and above with a 5$ donation... so technically, you pay 5$ and get a 10$ lunch lol

I could never figure why a company would get la list of the non-donners. sort of like a blacklist.

I have yet to read another post that was so true and yet so hilarious at the same time.

" suck off the tit of the community." Now that's good times.

You've got to feel good slopping mashed potatoes onto some person's plate at Thanksgiving when you categorize them like that. That was awesome. I completely agree with your post...concise and blunt, no politically correct posturing here. Thanks.

I went up to my generalist and said to him in front of everyone "I'm not giving them any money"

During the annual review of the "Employee Survey" I told the HR Generalist that there are serious problems with the companies approach on collecting donations for United Way that it was well known with all the employees that if you were not donating to United Way you were not going to get promoted, period. The response from our HR Generalist was that he was "shocked" and that the company may need to re-evaluate why we contribute in the first place. It was a weak excuse.

For those wondering why they post the "did not donate" list they forgot to add "did not donate/do not promote" list.

If its such a big deal to the company than maybe they should just handle the whole donation by themselves since revenues are around the 8 billion dollar area. Im sure they could come up with a couple million to donate on behalf of all employees.

I went on the United Way web site to see how much money is going to pay for salaries and what not. Here are the numbers I got straight from the unitedway web site:

2005:
$47,735,000 for functional expenses
$74,225,000 for revenues

64% of revenues went to functional expenses

2004:
$37,224,000 for functional expenses
$44,652,000 for revenues

83% of revenues went to functional expeses

This is why I do not donate.

You are absolutely correct on how the money you give goes to United Way. I was in Car Sales, and yes we too are pressured to be Leadership givers. I had given over $1200 one year and I specifically wanted my donations to go to Catholic Charities. The Catholic Diocese of Las Vegas sent me a letter thanking me for my $483.00 they received! Wait just a second, what happend to the other money that ERAC supposedly matches??? A fellow coworker of mine had his money donated to his Christian Church and yes, they got just a smidgeon of money.

Next year when enrollment came around, we all boycotted United Way except for our Car Sale Mgr. --because no donation no promotion. My Group Car Sale Manager sheduled a conference call with H.R. Joy of our lives. We had to listen to the propaganda for an hour about what United way does for the community. When we told him and the H.R. rep about how much are charities received, they did so much double talk and blah, blah, blah. We didn't budge. We are used car sale people? Do you not think we know you are trying to close us on a shady deal? Cmon. We convince people every day that a Ford Taurus is a better car than a Toyota Camry because we don't have a camry on our lot to sell. Righhht. What a douche bag! He finally shut up when one of my coworkers who was gay said that he doesn't support United Way because they offended the homosexual community.

I truly think that you used car sales guys have the toughest job. You guys are the life blood of the company and you have to sell used cars to people that could get the same vehicle new at the dealer for the same amount of money. I salute you smartgirl.
