So, this one ghetto-fab area manager phone shopped my branch a couple of weeks later (I was an assistant at the time-about 260 cars) during the middle of the week, and was trying to book an SUV to drive to Philly - about 8 hrs or so away.

He then told me HLE had offered him one for $16.99/day unlimited miles. I didn't match it and went on with my day. Well, when word got back that I didn't match it, all hell broke loose.

"I said to match ANY deal. HLE gets no deal," the RVP barked at me, as if the importance of "giving away" our vehicles needed to mirror the intesity of a NASA scientist during Shuttle pre-launch.

Well, I got to prove my brainwashed mentality (run your own business...I swear I'd heard that before) the very same day. This old dude that smelled of stale cigar smoke rolled thru the door and said Hertz had quoted him some insane rate to drive to Vermont (in January, mind you.) I don't remember the exact price, but I think it was around $20/day. So, I rolled the deal, not wanting to be set up again.

Well, a few days later, the guy ended up switching out b/c insted of wiper fluid, the car prep (or tie-wearing employee subbing as the ever-revolving door of car preps) had simply filled the car with water, which had frozen in the frigid Vermount winter.

So, when I tried to defend myself to my area manager, he wrote me up for sending a car that far away for such a meager rate.

I had just gotten my ass chewed for not renting an SUV for $16/day, but then I did the very same thing I was yelled out for not doing, and I got written up.

That, my friends, is what ERAC's all about.
CLASSIC ERAC double talk! I love it! What a shitty thing they did to you. But I am not surprised.... there is always a screw factor.

Default How I rid my fleet of 2 metros on the same day

This li'l diddy will be entitled "How I rid my fleet of 2 metros the same day". It goes a little something like this (sit back and grab your popcorn):

Back in 1997, One of my MT's booked a deal for a couple guys - no credit card, of course. The guy in charge of a trust dept at their bank called and gave us a check from their account for like the first week of rental.

The MT picked them up in a Metro and brought these scary fellows back to the branch - really scruffy, and one guy was a burn victim in a bad way. If you want to imagine what these guys looked like, the best visual I can give you is Jason Voorhees coming through the window at the end of Friday the 13th II - remember the long, sparse, greasy dark hair and the crazed face. Now imagine him drunk and getting ready to rent a Metro.

We rolled them on the merit of a driver's license, no insurance, and the banker's check. After a week, we got another check, and then another, like clockwork. We kept seeing the car driving around town, and each time we saw it, there were more pieces missing - hubcap, mirror, door dented, tail light. I swear if another month had gone by it would have been on 3 wheels.

The week we were supposed to re-write the contract, the checks stopped coming. I called banker, and he said these guys had been cut off from the trust fund.

We camped out on the main street in town, knowing the car would pass eventually. It did, and I followed it to one of those motels where people rent rooms for months at a time. At 4AM the next morning, a Saturday, I went to the place with a cop - he's got his gun drawn on the motel room door (of course you enter from the outside of the building). I have an extra key. I put it in the ignition and the lights come on, flashing right on the window in their motel room - but no activity.

I finally get it started and get it home. The thing is absolutely stanked out and trashed like they'd been living in it for a month. I get everything out of the car and into my house and start going through all the garbage. I start finding cash withdrawals from the trust fund. These 2 dirty, scary fellows are freakin' millionaires. They literally have over 1 million dollars in their trust fund balance, which I assume was probably a settlement for the burned dude. They are taking out thousands of dollars at a time, and from some of the pictures, receipts, and other stuff in the car, I can gather they live at this motel and spend all their money on alcohol, food, and probably some chronic.

So, I take the car early in the morning on Sat. to a body shop - the guy says "this thing will probably be totalled" - of course, it was by Loss Control.

I'm sleeping in because it's a Saturday, I was off, and I had just spent an hour repossessing a metro at a hotel at 4AM. My assistant manager calls me at 9AM, wakes me up, and says "Hey, the guys said their car got stolen (of course it did - actually repossessed by me!) and I rented them another one"...NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, I screamed - this is impossible!!

Needless to say, that car, another Metro, went missing immediately. A week goes by, and I tell my assistant manager - you drive around town and don't come back to the branch until you have located the car. Seriously.

He calls me a couple hours later and says he found it, in about the same condition as the other one if I recall correctly. It was just sitting in the parking lot of a used car dealership where they had paid cash to purchase a new truck and left our poor Metro sitting with the keys in the ignition.

Assistant manager - later promoted to manager

When I was a newbie MT, I quoted a guy a packer van for like a week to the other side of the country for like $60 a day, when it should have been more like $140/day

I have two for you. Back in the day our GM (Thats right GM) left his company car at our office before going out of town on vacation. We rolled it to the Branch Managers friend for a $100 dollar debit card deposit in his girlfriends name after two of his debit cards declined twice. He never came back and our GM was pretty pissed off. Especially when after 3 weeks the head of loss control and my Assistant went to the guys house and found the branch manager there smoking weed with the guy who had the truck. The branch manager tried to blame us but later on was fired after everyone wrote a letter stating he told us to do it (an MA and a 2 week MT were left to fend for themselves on a saturday).

The other is I used to rent to this Car Salesman for him to add on his girlfriend to the contract. She was 19 and after a while I would just bring her in and she would sign HIS name, we would look up HIS ccard and she would rent the car under his name. After they broke up I DID THE SAME THING STILL!! She then wrecked the car and I had her return is after hours, close the ticket and park it at the end of the row so it look like an OX lot damage.

Oh yeah and one New Years a buddy of mine and about 12 chicks were heading out to party and we realized only two people could drive so we went to the branch, opened it up and hijacked 2 mini vans (not rented and we were shitfaced) and took them out on the town, left them downtown and got them the next morning. PEACE
