They penalize you with the cost of the party and then run away with monetary tax benefit. I don't call this "running your own busines." I call this getting raped by a big brother of a company.
Let's be careful on the tax break part of this. If your commission is reduced because of these expenses, then you don't earn that income (the bad news) but then don't have to pay income taxes on this income (the silver lining to this black cloud). Therefore, yes, you do get a "tax break" from it. Of course, it would be far better to just have the income.

In addition, anything you contribute to the United Way should be tax deductible for you also.

Lastly, Enterprise can only deduct half of the total cost of meals and drinks from their taxes as a legitimate business expense. Congress passed this law some fifteen years ago to end the "three martini lunch" as it was called.

It's still a scam, of course.

I would love to see a copy of this letter. Please post it if you have it.

As you may know from some of my previous posts this is one of my FAVORITE (sarcasm implied) activities at ERAC and is near and dear to my heart.

I will trade you for the harassing emails that I have from my HR person on why I didn't donate...and the corresponding ones from my boss who stuck up for those of us who didn't donate.

If you show me yours, I show you mine!

It essentailly was a letter taylored to your current position with the expected donation ammount If you were a branch manager for example you were expected to donate $100 total as a minimum. by the way the letter was sent only to peoples home adresses.

Why don't they just have you sign something upon hirings and promotions that says, "Your pay plan includes a deduction of $x to the United Way." I'm being facetious, because of course they can't do that. This letter to people's home is the worst thing I have heard. Too scared to send it via MS01?

Easy way to get out of this either donate just $1 or fill out the form with instructions to bill you later and then never send in the $$$.

My boss in Admin once paid me $$ to fill out the form and donate. I just kept his money.

It is kind of funny. They never want to give to their employees, but they make their employees give to someone else.
