Sorry CW, I have to disagree with you on this one. Why use your own insurance to cover a car you don't own? Sure, if you have an actual traffic accident, your insurance company finds out anyway and may raise your rates or drop you, but what if the car gets stolen or vandalized or the windshield gets chipped by a rock? I'd rather drive with the peace of mind that If the car gets stolen or damaged, I'm off the hook. $800 is the going rate for a punched lock in Hawaii (which, BTW is the most common damage to rental cars here). I realize it may be different there, but I'm not willing to pay my deductible for a car I don't own, no matter what the situation. Car insurance companies don't differentiate between a rock chip or a punched lock or a rear end collision in a rental car. A claim is a claim is a claim. You cost the insurance company money, and they get it back from you by raising your rates. They get away with it because they know if you try to go to a different insurer, you'll pay even more or get denied because you are now a risk. Furthermore, there are only like 8 states that offer insurance policies which cover that nasty loss of use charge that the car rental company has the right to charge, whether they actually do or not. Do you want to take that chance? Other than the CDW issue, I agree with you totally.
