Pretty much any company that has a lot of talented people, makes me laugh every time when I think of a branch manager trying to tell me why I should be capitalizing a case of toilet paper so they make more money this month. This actually happened, and he wanted me to depreciate it too... good times.

You were asked to treat a case of toilet paper as a capital asset and to depreciate it? 3 year, 5 year, or 7 year schedule? Section 179?

Oh man, that's just sad. I'd love to see the IRS have a look at that.

I obviously didn't do it, just laughed at him... The BM just didn't understand what capitalizing something actually meant, he just thought I could do it for anything that he saw fit just so it wouldn't hit his bottom line as an operating expense for the month. Never got into schedules, I'm sure he wouldn't have any clue about that either.

It's just funny that of all the possible operating expenses he would also choose to include toilet paper. I don't even think you could have gotten someone at Enron to capitalize toilet paper.

What's next? Copy paper and bottled water? Fresh flowers?

Hard to really blame the BM's, it's not their fault they don't have any clue about accounting. The problem occurs when people are promoted to a management position almost entirely based upon their ability to sell a bullshit product. BM's have no idea what they are doing in terms of financials and this is one of the reasons that I got out of ERAC, trying to teach accounting to some liberal arts major from Frat U. is quite painful. It is hard to continue to develope new skills in accounting when you spend your whole day fixing stupid errors that have made made by branch managers and area managers. If ERAC would promote people with actual business skills instead of sales skills these kinds of things wouldn't happen.

I'm an accountant not a sales guy, so my knowledge of sales jobs out there is pretty limited. Every company has an operations and a finance department, just don't want to share the name of my company as people in ERAC know that I work there.
