Default Stolen Car from Group 57

Here is a nice little story coming out of Group 57. Branch 5712 to be exact...those poor guys. This could've happened to just about anyone.

LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - Police Monday arrested a 38-year-old man after he allegedly stole a rental car in Akron and, driving for much of the time on three flat tires, led police on a long chase before crashing in Lancaster city.

Hector Felix Rosa was captured after fleeing Akron in a Chevrolet Impala and driving on three different highways before exiting Route 30 with officers from seven police departments in pursuit, police said.

The chase began shortly before 1:30 p.m. Monday when Rosa walked onto the Enterprise Rent-a-Car parking lot, 315 S. Seventh St., Akron, police said.

Rosa approached Enterprise employees Gerald Book and Chris George as they cleaned the Impala. Rosa told the men that his truck broke down and he needed to catch a bus, police said.

When Book and George turned away, Rosa drove off in the $15,500 Impala, police said.

Akron Borough police Chief Thomas Zell broadcast a description of the vehicle and driver to police in the area.

An Ephrata police officer spotted Rosa driving north on Route 222 in Ephrata Township.

Rosa drove toward Berks County before suddenly turning around in the median and heading south on Route 222, police said.

New Holland Borough police laid "stop sticks," which are spikes used to flatten tires, on the highway at the Route 322 intersection.

The Impala drove over the spikes, flattening three of its tires.

Rosa drove the Impala on its steel rims at speeds ranging from 50 mph to 65 mph through West Earl and Manheim townships. The Impala exited Route 222 onto Route 30 as police followed.

Rosa then exited Route 30 and drove onto New Holland Avenue toward Lancaster city.

State police Trooper Ariel Torres followed the Impala to Clay and Lime streets.

Rosa crashed the Impala at the intersection and fled on foot, police said.

Lancaster city police Officers Todd McFarland and Sgt. James Smith collared Rosa after a brief foot chase.

Zell charged Rosa, of 552 Reynolds Ave., with theft by unlawful taking, fleeing or eluding police and reckless driving.

New Holland District Judge Rodney Hartman arraigned Rosa at 5:15 p.m. Monday. Rosa was committed to Lancaster County Prison after failing to post $75,000 bail.

I'm sure that will hurt, and I'm also sure someone will get written up or fired for this, which is a shame since I'm sure all ERAC employees have put themselves in a situation where a passerby could've dove into a car and taken off. I'm not sadistic, I genuinley felt bad for the employees when I read this story.

I don't know what they could really fire them for other than turning around. In my old GP there was a branch that denied a customer a rental who did not qualify and then during the rush he stole the keys off of the counter to a van and peaced out with them. No one was canned for that and that was not the slickest thing to do.

The best part is that the customer who had just returned the car is going to hit with the "Discovered" damage scam.

Loss Control: "But sir, the car had three flats and had obviously been driven on the rims."

Customer: "I don't understand. It was fine when I dropped it off."

Loss Control: "Here's our invoice for $1,300. Pay within 15 days or we'll have to turn this over to collections."
