| There are plenty of good solicitors around. Assuming that you want to speak to one regarding an employment grievance, the one AC is using seems to be doing a good job. The problem is always the cost - it is advisable to join a Union (Amicus, GMB, etc) as they can support and represent you in any disciplinary or grievance procedure and will employ specialist solicitors and barristers as required - all for £150 per year or so. For that money, you would get around one hour's worth of a decent solicitor's time on your own. Enterprise's employment practices are based on the likelyhood that most new graduate employees are too skint to pay for a solicitor and too conservative to join a Union. |

The employer can refuse to recognise the union for negotiating rights (up to a limit) but cannot refuse an employee to be represented or accompanied by a union official for grievance or disciplinary matters. Join a Union! - sounds like a no-brainer to me! |

if you work at erac, you would be very foolish not to join one! |

| Amicus or GMB are both £9.75 a month and can be joined online. Well worth the money and just look at ERAC's record against people with union support - even the worst of people can get back in or stay in with a combination of union backing and ERAC idiocy! |

| All very true - I'm gonna join Amicus tomorrow and bring a case of my own. You don't need to have been a member of the union for any period of time before they will represent you so just pay your £10 and bring a case against ERAC. It's the simplest way to get them to change. The more people who join, and the more who bring actions gainst them, the more likely we are to have a fair deal. Examples of areas on which a union case may be brought against ERAC: - Overtime pay - a decent rate is needed. - Definition of 'occasional' overtime. - Breaks - for lunch, and between our marathon driving sessions. - The numerous other ways we are screwed out of money, eg. on mobile phone use, employee competitions which don't pay out, vehicle damage etc. Please, tell as many people as possible to spend the £10 and join the union [it's best most people belong to one union so I'm gonna go to Amicus unless anyone suggests a better alternative?]. And please please please raise your concerns with a GM with a union rep. present, and take the matter as far as it needs to be taken. |
