Default Why in suits

Okay - so you have to wash cars. The thing I don't get is why employees are forced to wash cars in suits and dress clothes. Other than it must cost people a fortune to keep replacing their clothes - let's face it - it just looks plain ridiculous seeing someone washing a car in dress clothes.

What's ERAC's gimmick on this one? I just think it's awful of a company to make people do this and can't come up with any reasoning for doing so.

I was interviewing for a Assistant Manager position and the ARM asked me what was one thinkg I would change and my answer was being able to wear something other than white because A) they show dirt more often from washing cars and b) because it is dull. His answer was this long drawn out conservative professional BS answer but then he asked me "What do you think people are thinking when they pull up to a branch and they see someone cleaning their car in a suit and tie?" My response was and I quote "They probably think those people have their resumes on Monster to be perfectly honest and if it is a prospective employee he/she is probably thinking there is no way I am doing this." Needless to say I did not get that spot. I would do it so my employees did not have to when I was an ABM and BM since I made more than them and could afford weekly dry cleaning and new shirts/ties.

If you wear colored shirts then you look more like a car salesman and thats not the image enterprise wants to project. Asking "what do you think people are thinking when they pull up to a branch and see someone cleaning their car in a suit and tie" is a pretty dumb question but answering "changing the color of shirts worn" as an answer to the one thing you would change about enterprise is the more likely reason for not getting the promotion.

Actually I was told I did not get the promotion because the manager felt that I was going to get bored at that branch as it was not a challenge and I would more than likely quit because it was too easy of a branch to run and being that I was looking for a challenge or turn around branch that I should try for a "city" office. To address the "car salesman" though maybe if I was wearing gold cufflinks, rings, bracelets and a watch but in my current position I wear a multitude of solid colors and even some pinstriped shirts and I look more professional now that ever in my ERAC whites. It depends on how you carry yourself and the way you prepare for the day. Car salesman are not sales persons either they are reality distorters who instead of providing a product or service they negotiate numbers and get permission from their manager to make deals. Not real sales and also not all car sales people are like that I must add.

I always hated the white shirt rule. I have been out of ERAC for a couple years and have work in a profession suited to my education. We are a business casual office the people here are much more professional looking then the E-hacks.

I don't think colored shirts make you look like a car salesman. As long as the shirt isnt too flamboyent it looks professional.

When customers would see me washing cars in a shirt and tie they would ask why? I never had a good answer for them.

That white shirt stuff is out the window. I remember they used to talk about IBM being conservative but I have a buddy who works there and that went out the window years ago. ERAC is nuts. A true professional can sell and provide service in a fucking towel if they have true ability. A piece of shit is still a piece of shit even if it's wearing a suit.

Agreed. Even the most conservative companies are going business casual now, with maybe the exception of banks and certain retail outlets. And even those give you the option of picking the color to wear.

Worst part about quitting enterprise: having 12 white dresshirts, 8 of which are too stained or ripped to wear at the new job. What a waste of money buying those things

I have not worn a white shirt since my last day...thank god for a new job where I can actually choose different shirts.....the other good thing is not having to buy cheap ass shoes either since they would get ruined anyways.
