Default ERAC job

I was hired in June after graduation. I've been with ERAC roughly 4 months in San Antonio area and the experience is nothing like what they tell you in the interview. All of my other friends have gotten decent entry-level jobs making a little more money, but nowhere near the hours I work. I can think of at least a dozen other co-workers looking to get out.

What really bothers me is now I realize this occupation is beneath me. All along I kinda thought this, because I never have fully explained my job to my friends or family. What cystallized this was when my folks were visiting and saw me at work. I can't begin to tell you the dissappointment on my father's face when they pulled up to my branch and saw me schlepping a car wash brush in a shirt and tie. I could read the thought in his head: "I paid how much for him to go to college to wash cars?" Nothing can erase that image from my mind.

When I was close to graduation, I never, never thought of going into retail (which this job is) as a car rental agent. This frick'n routine is so monotonous that my brain is addled.

This is my routine: write up 15-20 tickets a day. Wash 10-12 cars a day. Shuttle customers to and from bodyshops, dealerships and wherever 20 times a day. Maybe one day out of the mix, I get to go on sales calls which consists of dropping donuts at various auto dealerships. That even sucks because then you have to write a "sales report" on what you did on the sales calls. They all start with :"I gave the donuts to.....blah..blah..blah.. Enterprise is great..blah...blah...blah..Enterprise strives for customer service..blah..blah..blah. Also add a couple of self-righteous complainers during your day. Next day repeat. Next day repeat. Next day repeat. It's all the same; nothing changes except the weather and even that sucks now.

I can't believe I am working for this outfit. They made it sound sooo good as an opportunity not to pass up. What was I thinking when I was hired on? I was taken in by a slick misrepresentation of the job description and I only have myself to blame. I have no savings, no life outside work, and now a burning motivation to update my resume and bail out.

My advice is NOT TO WORK FOR THESE GUYS.

One of the miserable majority at ERAC

I'm ashamed

I think everyone here who is bashing the rental car industry really think that the corporate, capitalist society we live in is always fair, honest, and easy. True! who wants to have to work so many hours per week. And who really wants to have to deal with peoples bullshit. And lastly, who wants to wash cars in suits and who feels that since they have a Bachelors Degree that they should have it made. WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD. Enterprise is a Enterprise because it is a business that uses business techniques to stay ahead of the game and pull in the big ass bucks. What company do you know of that always tells the truth to its customers, How many Pharma reps will actually tell you the details about Premarin and what messed up stuff they do to a horse in order to make this drug as well as the long term side effects. The casino industry is built on lies and greed, scams the chase of a winning jackpot etc.... How many car dealers tell the truth or nothing but the truth, Hell even the President has a job where he lies all day. This is the WORLD people and nothing is peachy, not even waking up in the morning is peaceful, as soon as you get up your stomache hurts...cuz you are hungry, you are rushing, and there is always something that HAS to get done.

ALSO< just because I went to college does not mean any one else is supposed to care, Its more for the personal benefit of being educated and knowledgeable and will pay off in the long run. Most jobs require you to have certain skills such as people skills, self motivation skills, etc..... A Degree is really only going to pay off immediately if you go into a profession such as MD, Lawyer, Teacher, VET, Therapist, etc. And then you still have to acquire additional education and/or licensing. In this situation you need to grow up Senior Year in Highschool and evaluate your own personal situation. Challenge the Oppportunity costs for yourself, SCHOOL then WORK, or WORK plus SCHOOL< or JUST WORK.
Where in college do you learn how to negotiate, budget, and be personable.
No WHERE< but you learn book sense.
Plus if you think positive you will find their is positivity in everything you do. ERAC might not be the place for you, but do not knock someone else from taking on the challenge. My church and Family comes first and ERAC is closed on Sundays and the opportunity to make Money to support my child is there. Everyone situation is different. Currently I work for a company that literally takes people and ruins their lives. I work for a Casino in the Casino Marketing Department, where I work nights, holidays are black out, and no one gets a weekend off. Smoking is everywhere (AUTOMATIC DEATH SENTENCE) and you literally have to lie and promote gambling to a person who just gambled his/her mortgage, savings, and max out credit which is hard on the heart, however the company provides great excellent benefits, they pay well, and the people you work with or wonderful, extra incentives, bonuses, and they have excellent PR. But the industry was not for me.

Also, their is politics involved in every company, sex with co workers is not foreign, etc....... WE ARE ALL HUMAN BEINGS AND YOU NEVER DEPEND ON MAN/WOMAN YOU DEPEND ON YOURSELF TO LISTEN TO THE HIGHER POWER TO GUIDE YOU AND HELP YOU RESIST TEMPTATIONS OF SEX< GREED< LIES< ETC.

If a company tells you that their business runs on selling extra insurance and you need a job and you know the company is stable and great opportunity then you personally need to do whatever to sell that insurance, if you can't cuz you just do not want to lie to the customer then get out, but that is with any COMPANY not just ERAC and HERTZ.

Now as for as the customer is always right> WRONG we all know that we are all customers at some point, meaning we know sometimes we bitch and catch a fit and the person who we are doing it to didn't even do us anything, but hey even if you take a walk to the corner store, someone is more than likely going to piss you off. However it is up to you to let it take you off your game or whatever. It shows character when you can handle the heat.

Possibly alot of you all that are talking bad about these companies just haven't been through enough disappointment and heartache in life to know that you are blessed, and sometimes you have to pay your dues. Working for a rental car company is embarrassing I hear some of you say, IF I have a job and can provide as a single mother for my children or whatever the case may be then I could never be embarrased.

NEXT AND LAST WASHING CARS IN SUITS,
In order to be succesful in your own business or running a company business you have to know what it feels like to be in everyone who works for you SHOES.
GET off your high horse, too much pride can cause a man to be blinded and miss out on the value in what has been given to him.

I love you all, and wish everyone luck in whatever they decide to pursue in life. But lets stop with all of the hate, and namecalling, we live in a fucked up world, just deal with it and DO YOU! NO ONE CAN TELL ME NOTHING!

I agree with many of your points, but the excuse that many corporations don't tell the truth, so it's okay that ERAC does is extremely ignorant! When I started with ERAC, it was explained that you have to wash cars now and then, but it's a lot of fun! They don't tell you that you wash them every day, whether it's 100 degrees, or 20 below, because the manager is watching his expenses, and doesn't want to hire a car prep. It's fine that supposedly everyone starts in the same position, except Andy's daughter of course, but what kind of image do you promote! Hi, I'm (insert name here), sorry I smell like a yak's ass, but I was washing cars in 100 degree weather, sucked my tie in the vacuum, sprayed bug juice in my eyes, etc... Don't tell me ERAC is trying to promote an image, when you have your employees looking horrible after washing cars. No, it wasn't beneath me, but it sucked! Get of your high horse.

My point was that every company in todays society has its problems. Just like College is not for everyone, certain jobs are not for everyone. In your case it wasn't you, however they have to be somebody else who loves ERAC or Hertz because they have so many damn employees. I just don't agree with people bashing others for trying for themselves and bashing a company. Man is not perfect, all i'm trying to do is get where i got to get in life so my seed will have something to start off with just in case i'm outta here before he/she is grown. I know one thing that I won't let anyone, Boss, co worker or anyone make me degrade myself or work like a slave especially if i see they do not appreciate it, but if its to benefit me or the team and their are incentives to look forward to hey I'm down. I have been working since 12 years old, not cuz I'm piss poor either, i am the only child and have 2 parents whom are still together and they work hard to have given me everything. I chose to work starting young because I realized an important lesson at that age. And whether it was cleaning toilets, flipping burgers, whatever I had pride in doing it. And that's part of the reason why in my heart I'm at peace and in my mind i'm succesful, and when i do go home upstairs I know GOD will say well done. I just want people to stay positive and think of the big picture, i do not like the negativity, but I do wish you luck in all that you do and I'am sorry ERAC wasn't for you. God Bless!!!
