You would be known in the admin offices as a "PAG" Protected Age Group worker. ERAC is DESPERATE to hire people in this group because it has lost or settled every age discrimination suit that has ever been brought against them. In the 2004 Orlando meetings HR came to every break-out group and talked to the L3's & above about the importance of looking at Baby Boomer generation employees and all the benefits of hiring someone in that generation. In typical ERAC fashion, my Regional Rental Manager looked at me later that day and just laughed, shook his head and said, "Let's not even discuss it. You know just as well as I do that HR is trying to cover their asses and some old fart wouldn't make it with us."

To the original poster, I would advise you to keep looking. IF you actually got hired because 3 people in the interview process were open-minded enough to bring you on board because of all the positives you can offer, the grind of it and the other employees would run you off within 6 months. Just keep looking for a job where people will actually appreciate your experience and other intangibles you could offer. ERAC would be a waste of your time.

wonderful input. great points and completely true. Your age won't prevent you from hacking it, the bullshit you put up with for the relatively low salary and the extremely long hours in rental wouldn't be worth it. If you're looking to be a driver instead, we have tons of over 40 drivers, but I have no idea what they make.

Don't bother. It honestly would not be worth the change because, and don;t take this the wrong way, not too many older people make it and these are the reasons:

You have been in the business world too long and will realize that all of the people younger than you are fucking indiots.(Not all just most)

It can be very physically demanding (changing tires, washing cars, kissing ass for promotional reasons)

You will be thought of as the "Token Old Guy"(its 2005 there is no more token black and I can say that and get away with it because I am mixed and there is a puppet on my hand)

Old people smell funny

Just kidding I know old people who smell like roses.

In all seriousness it is really not worth it. You can do much better especially with your experience and shouldn't waste it on a position with ERAC. Its good to get a fresh start in the business world but a shitty way to leave it!

Okay, now that's funny. I love that kissing ass is "physically demanding". That's awesome. Thanks for the laugh.

I remember this one 50 yr old guy who was hired when I was there. I think Erac hired him just to prove some point that they were a diverse company. He was a nice enough guy, and it was funny watching him sell waiver. The bullshit statistics he made up about number of accidents, windshield replacements, and loss of use claims was kinda funny. All in the name of waiver, of course. He lasted like 2 months and then he just stopped showing up. An MT position at Enterprise is not for anyone older than 30, sometimes much younger. A driver position, yeah. You'll probably enjoy that, but if you're looking for a new career, a driver is not the way to go. That's a part time gig. What was your previous career in?

Yeah, It must be hard to look around at ALL of your coworkers at 50 and you know you're old enough to be their father. That wouldn't be conducive to good morale. I'd resent it. But if you can handle working your ass of with a bunch of people half your age whose topics of conversation often revert to sex or scatological references, you'd be alright.

When you get old your neck gets stiff, so it might really be physically demanding.
