Did you do anything to even the score when you left?

When I was no longer walking with a purpose, I decided to leave. Normally, I am a fast walker who looks like he has somewhere to go. While walking to a car in one of our dealer lots, I noticed I was moving much slower than usual and caught a glance of myself in the plate glass window. I did not look happy. When there was no intrinsic reward or meaning in what I was doing, I became sluggish, depressed, and angry. I need to know I am doing something meaningful with my life. ERAC could never hope to provide this, so I am getting out now.

Sounds like me right now, although I work for the OTHER green company. Not much better, even though they pay hourly they don't give raises. Fuck that shit.

Watching senior managers schedule happy hours so they could spend some quality one on one time with 22 year old women, while their wives were home taking care of their kids.

Lack of controls over sensitive information such as personnel reviews, bonus calculations, credit cards, etc. You could always find these things on shared drives.

Managements swaggering around like they were all a bunch of brain surgeons, when all they really did was rent and lease cars. Their experienced staff often came from businesses with more complex business models. Those who actually knew how to address or fix a problem were treated badly. I felt like a fish out of water because I had solved the same or similar problems at other companies.

Systems built on ancient hardware and software. You had to take a step back to do a job that should have been easy, because the problems have been solved elsewhere, but these people had to reinvent the wheel. You'd spend one part working on the problem and three parts explaining to your boss that the problem has been solved elsewhere, a long time ago and with a lot less effort.

The cult-like mentality.

Being told during orientation that because Andy's company was a private company that you might be asked to do things that were beneath you. (Makes you wonder if people who work for other large private companies are asked to scrub toilets so that the owner can enjoy his billions of dollars. I wonder if this was the philosophy at Dell, Apple and Microsoft.

Seeing all the Hispanic guys cutting the grass at headquarters. I wonder who checked their immigration status. Anything for a buck.

Persons in position of authority who lacked the experience or people skills to gain the respect of competent people working on their teams.

Watching your boss start his car and drive home after twelve beers.

Need I say more.

I got a laugh out of the rental apes who would brag about what other people made, not their own paychecks of course. Or, how wealthy Andy was. RENTAL APE: YOU ARE BRAGGING ABOUT MAKING ANOTHER MAN A BILLIONAIRE WHILE YOU GET NOTHING!!!

The frat boy mentality. There was a regional celebration over in Region D last night in which one of the area managers wore a Superman costume while summarizing a powerpoint presentation on how great the fiscal year was and who the star players were. Heavy drinking, cheers, and high fives erupted from the ERAC crowd as they watched with hungry eyes at the growth plans for 2008. All the while, I sat there thinking, "Are these guys serious?"
This company is a joke run by people who never really left college.

what made me leave? there are a thousand answers to this, but let's focus on the big things.

- the hours were always too long for the amount we got paid.
- perpetually understaffed
- PDMs -- what a load of crap-- tell me how I'm supposed to have an employee out from 10am-4pm doing "sales" when we don't even have enough people to run the store smoothly?
- lack of support from upper management. my RRM was HORRIBLE. wouldn't ever help out customers, except for the few times they'd pick up the phone when the office was slamming -- and they would book insane deals, like deliveries on monday mornings, or book a minivan for a res in an hour when we don't have one and we're insanely busy (hence the reason they had to pick up the phone in the first place). the best was when my RRM came to my office, we had a huge line of people, only 2 of us were actually in the office to write tickets, and my RRM goes and washes their car in the bay, then comes back in, WALKS PAST ALL OF THE WAITING CUSTOMERS and goes into their office. what, couldn't help out one or two people? apparently they're above that. what a great morale booster.
- inconsistent direction from upper management - one day i'm told to CQ everyone the same. another day i'm told to just let it slide if someone important that gives us business is referring this person. so, in reality, we're not treating everyone the same, now are we?
- not having any cars EVER on a monday morning.
- the company was starting to hire idiots as a part of their "affirmitive action" -- essentially pressure from the group manager to get a more diverse workplace. i'm sure they passed on a bunch of qualified white guys, even though we were short staffed, just because we already have enough white guys working for us. deal with it -- the midwest is full of white men, so who do you think is going to work at places that resemble a frat house?
- ESQI -- obviously if everyone in the branch is miserable b/c we're all burned out and underpaid, and we feel abandoned by upper management, then do you think we're going to 'go the extra mile' with customers? it's hard enough to drag ourselves out of bed in the morning to go to a job to be verbally abused by customers for 12 hours!

I'm so glad I'm out. It's been over a month since I left, and every day just gets better and better. I can't believe I held on for as long as I did with the company (over 2 years!).

Another complainer? Is that what powers this site?
Why do you expect a job to be easy? Instead of complaining try WORKING. Maybe you won't be so unhappy all the time. No one ver promised ERAC was a kickback job!
