Default Do You Remember George Best?

Hello my British Friends,

George Best must have been quite a guy, as both The Economist and the BBC World Service had extraordinarily nice things to say about him in their obituaries this month. He seems to have personified football at a time before the serious commercialization of the sport; it was sad to hear of his later troubles with alcohol and bad financial planning. He seems to have been the prince in a time long before Beckham.

Anyway, do any of you remember him?

I read this in a sports magazine shortly after his death...

I spent a lot of my money on booze, birds and fast cars - the rest I just squandered. -- George Best

He was a bit before my time but my dad and his friends tell me that he was a legend.

If only he played for Liverpool, and not Manchester Utd

From what i have seen and heard he was one of the best footballers ever, if he was playing now he would be worth around £50 million and earn around £7 million a year in wages and probably even a more a year in sponsorships. He is basicly david beckham of his day but a lot better footballer in every way.

The best story I heard was when Best was staying in a hotel and roomservice came in to find him in bed with the then current Miss World, surrounded by bottles of champagne and cash lying everywhere.

The waiter shook his head and tutted "Where didit all go wrong?"

Best took a look around him.

"Wrong? What do you mean wrong?"

Aren`t likely to be many eracers who are old enough to have seen him play, only just the replays. i wouldnt compare him to beckham from what i`ve seen - different type of player and truly one of a kind. Apparently a few years ago he was told if he carried on drinking he would be dead in 10 years, and if he led the life of a saint he would live for another 30. He is supposed to have said "Give me the 10 years I`ll enjoy please". A sad loss, but no an unexpected one. probably the player who has come nearest him recently is gazza - another player who has been destroyed my media pressure.

George Best was probably the most naturally talented player of his generation who had the misfortune to be in the right place at the right time for footballers to start being treated like popstars. He came from a Belfast council estate and suddenly had fame thrust upon him and he didn't know what to do with it. Like most Irishmen (This is a stereotype I know, but one have largely found to be true.. it also applies to the British as well) he enjoyed a drink and had the money and time to continually go on the piss. Hence why he was sacked my Man utd for not turning up to training etc..

He also made a fabulous appearance on Wogan (talkshow host) when he came on stage wasted and talked abot shagging...

Later in life his liver stopped working so he was forced to stop drinking. H/e he managed to get hold of a replacement liver, vowing to not waste his new found opportunity of life, continuing his teetotal stance. This lasted literally hours, and he swiftly dramnk himself into his grave. Oh well, as least he had his son Calum there.. oh wait he was following in his fathers footsteps and went out clubbing with the excuse of "It's the only way I know how to cope"

It was a tragic waste...

I mean a tragic waste of talent, that could have been better spent on someone who wasn't (lets face it) a bit of an nob. and it was his liver not his kidney.
