Default Should We Do A Week's Test In The U.K. Forum Requiring Registration?

Hello All,

It's long been an issue at Failing Enterprise as to whether we should require users to register before they can post. There are significant advantages and disadvantages to this proposal, and the answer is definitely not obvious.

For some recent discussion on this idea, see this thread:

http://failingenterprise.com/forums/...ead.php?t=1769

So here's a proposal we're discussing: Going a week permitting only registered users to post in the U.K. forum. The test would run for only a week, and only in the U.K. forum. We'll see how it works out and get lots of feedback from the community.

I generally try to defer to our community on complicated questions like this.

Do you think this test is a good idea? Yes, or no, and please explain your thinking on this.

i dont think its a good idea but i think you're being forced down that route by the people who just want to insult each other on the threads. Personally i wont register, i'll just read the forum until the weeks trial is over and then comment again. i like my anonimity.

But registering on the discussion board only gives you a consistent username, and doesn't sacrifice your anonymity. When registering, you don't have to reveal any more information at all.

Is it the consistent username that's the problem?

yes. its the fact that people can look through your old threads and build a fact file on who you are. sometimes you say you were ex BM then on another day you say your were ex area A or whatever and then you can be narrowed down to an individual. it seems that a couple of people have been caught out like this.

Ahhh, OK. I was incorrectly thinking the problem was that people thought the fact of registration would reveal their identity, whereas it's the consistent username that causes the problem. For many people, the main benefit of others' registering is because of this consistent username and the ability to earn a reputation.

Well, this is definitely a problem. I'll have to think about this some more.

Anyone have thoughts on this?

Has anyone really been caught out on this? I haven't heard anything.

There was an old thread which was used to bring up the fact that someone was lying about being married. this is the sort of problem you avoid by remaining anonymous.
