| the standard response in my group was well we use Firestone (insert non-dealership name here) and the check engine/change oil light is set at the factory. Unfortunately Firestone etc. does not have the computer equipment available to reset these lights so don't worry the car is fine. I'm looking through the maintenance records now and it just had an oil change 2 weeks ago. bullcrap 9x out of 10 that car hadn't had an oil change in 15k to 30k miles. |

| The "change oil" light is set by the manufacturer to come on at certain mileage intervals. The light comes on at say...5000 miles regardless if the oil has been changed or not before that amount of miles. You do not need any special computer equipment for most makes/models to turn this light off. Most of the time you can find the procedure in the owners manual. GM's for example you turn the key to on, then pump the gas 5 times within 15 seconds...and magic! The light goes off. All in all a huge pain in the ass for us car rental people. |
