Default Demote or Quit

I was just offered a demotion on Friday. I was told I can take this job or quit that my current position is being eliminated and that I would be laid off if I did not want to take the demotion. I'm in Kansas. Any one know if I quit can I still file for unemployment, or do thay have to fire me?

if unemployment is what you are after, then don't quit
ERAC would love for you to quit and will make things as uncomfortable for you so you quit.
It's what happened to me a few yrs ago, i held my ground and got unemployment.
great way to search for a new job, and sadly the $$ is not that much less than slaving at ERAC for 50 hrs.
new job even called ERAC for job history and all they could say was confirm that i worked there

Kansas? What do you mean, your position is being eliminated, and you have the choice?? I thought they taught that in training: "Enterprise has never laid anyone off." Wasn't that the quote? Are you GP51, or GP05?

Don't quit. That's what they want you to do because they don't have to pay unemployment if you quit. Make them fire you. Don't listen to their B.S. about how it looks better to resign than quit because they are not going to give you a recommendation anyhow.

yeah i got some friends in HR, who get calls from jobs people are interviewing for all the time, and she says they are told by the RVP to always decline to comment. it sucks, cause then that looks really bad for the person interviewing. very shady and unethical business practice.

Well, you could quit a specific resignation letter stating that this is due to "health reasons"
I mean, I'm not sure what the specific unemployment laws are over there however that is a pretty standard provision.
You usually have to get someone to certify it though. Regular doctors tend to be conservative and therefore are less apt to make a determination of this kind. However, mental health professionals usually tend to like to help. Plus you could get disability.

I'm not advocating that but it has been know to work...

you are right. i worked in grp 48 and i was suffering from high blood pressure and severe headaches. that caused me to get IV's and oxygen. My doctor told me that i couldnt keep going on like this so he told me if i quit he would write a letter stating my health was deterirating due to work conditions. he did plus i got a grant and an unemployment ext of 13 weeks past the regular time allowed. at the end of 13 weeks i was to go to the doctor for an exam to see if i was eligible to work again or if i was to remain on "assistance". I dropped 20 lbs. Felt great and got of blood pressure meds. I was only 26. The grant was great. It covered rent, and living cost. I snagged a job before it ever came to the second exam. however that doctor pretty much saved me.
